The City of Houston has approved plans proposed by the Harrisburg Redevelopment Authority (HRA) to address traffic safety concerns at the intersection of McKinney Street and the Columbia Tap Trail.
In January 2023 a collision between a motorcycle and bicycle at the intersection resulted in two fatalities and prompted discussion of improvements to improve safety for all users. Following the fatal collision a team from the City of Houston and representatives of Harrisburg Redevelopment Authority came together to discuss methods of modifying travel behavior and creating awareness before entering the intersection. HRA agreed to finance design and construction of improvements.
In April 2024, Harrisburg Redevelopment Authority/TIRZ No. 23 tasked Gauge Engineering with evaluation and recommendation of safety improvements to the intersection. The firm provided four options for consideration by city staff ranging from minor adjustments to more substantial changes to the intersection. In July 2024, the Board of Directors approved a task order to move forward with improvements upon city selection of a preferred option.
Improvements to the crossing will include highly visible pavement markings north and south of the crossing, rectangular rapid flashing beacons with solar panel assembly and push buttons, advanced warning signage, pedestrian refuge islands/medians, and detectable warning surfaces at the trail crossings.
Construction of improvements is expected to begin May 2025 and be completed by June 2025.
